Getting heat from all angles It feels like getting taken to court could be the new black in cryptoland, and Coinbase is certainly keeping on trend. Coinbase has been hit with a $350m lawsuit by Veritaseum alleging that the platform unlawfully uses its patented 'value transfer' technology. It claims that the tech is used in virtually all parts of the Coinbase platform, and that they were 'uncooperative' when trying to settle out of court. Coinbase has had its fair share of legal scuffles recently. In August, a class action claimed they failed to properly secure user accounts and in July they came under SEC investigation for allegedly offering unregistered securities. Earlier this month, Coinbase also threw support behind suing the US Treasury for Tornado Cash sanctions. All this hasn't done much good for its share price, with COIN now down 84% from its 2021 ATH. CEO Brian Armstrong, feeling compelled to defend the company's decision to go public in light of the declines, argued that it was positive for the overall crypto industry because it put them "on the main stage" and legitimizes the industry as a whole.
